When I first moved to California in 2004,
my husband had just bought a massive mahagony bedroom suite. You couldn't move anything around in there!
He had dark burgundy bed linens and white mini-blinds. Other than a couple of brass lamps and a hanging shell lamp, that
was the extent of his decorating. One day, I decided that I couldn't stand it anymore. I asked him if I could
change things. He squirmed a little (well, alot actually) but finally agreed, so off I went. I started
moving things around the house. I don't have before pictures, but here are some of when we were done.ter photos.

The wall hangings are collections from his travels. He
had them in the living room on the entertainment center where they weren't seen most of the time. The wicker table and
hanging black lantern were finds from the Goodwill. The pots on the table are also from his travels that had been scattered
about the house or in closets. One of the pieces came from a friend's yard sale. She'd carried it in her lap all
the way from Africa many years ago and didn't want it anymore. It fit perfect with the rest of his collection and had
meaning for him. The pottery in the corner had been outside on the deck collecting rainwater.

The gauze curtains were another Goodwill find (my favorite
boutique. The wooden blinds were a gift from the same friend who was having the yardsale. They fit the bedroom
perfectly and that's what started the safari/jungle theme in the first place! I changed the dark bedding for the lighter
striped, added earth-toned pillows, all from guess where.....yep, the Goodwill! When the sun streamed through
the blinds in the late afternoon, it gave such a warm feeling.

The mirror was a true bargain from TJ Maxx for $7.00.
The final touch were hanging bamboo beads from Spencer's. That separated the bedroom from the bath area and kept the
safari feel. I kept the theme going with wicker in the bath area, also. What you don't see is a multi-colored
throw rug on the floor that matches the pillows. I added lots of candles in sandlewood scent and this became my
favorite room in the house!
